Complaints have been given to the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office of individuals receiving phone calls where the caller says they are a police officer from the Sheriff’s Office, providing a name of “Captain Davenport.”
The Sheriff’s Office does not have a “Captain Davenport” that is employed with them. The scammer then continues to inform the potential victim that they have a warrant out for their arrest and inform them to respond to the nearest police department with US Currency.
Those who receive this call are being advised by the Sheriff’s Office not to provide the scammer any personal information, send money, or provide any credit/gift card numbers.
Law enforcement agencies do not contact the public for money directly. The best thing to do is to hang up on the scammer and to then contact your local law enforcement agency.
