Cortland Schools Seeking Instrument Donations For Students On Waiting Lists To Play

Local News

The Cortland High School Music Department is seeking instrument donations from the community to help local students on waiting lists begin playing in the various bands and orchestras in the district.

“Last year, we really pushed band and orchestra to students in the elementary schools,” said Jen Rafferty, Cortland Junior High Music Department Chair. “Not only is music important to students as a way of artistic expression, it is also healthy for their social, emotional and intellectual well-being.”

Rafferty says the school fortunately made a lot of progress in its recruitment efforts last year. Representatives from the high school’s music department visited the various elementary schools in the area and now more students than ever before are lining up to play an instrument.

The school simply couldn’t keep up.

“It’s a great problem to have,” said Rafferty, speaking of the abundance of young students eager to take on the challenges of performing music. “Now, we don’t have enough instruments for everybody, and we’re hoping the community will help.”

Budget constraints have made it difficult for the music department itself to obtain more instruments.

Community members are kindly asked to donate both old and unused instruments to Cortland High school by bringing them to the school’s main office.

You can also donate funds that could help the school buy more instruments for its students.
