Cortland Schools Looks to Add Another Resource Officer – Common Council Approves
The CIty of Cortland Common Council voted unanimously to approve a memorandum of understanding between the City of Cortland and the Cortland Enlarged City School District that would allow the district to add another School Resource Office for next year.
The memorandum underlines the details in the duties and cost sharing for an additional school resource officer for the district. Under the understanding, Cortland Schools will absorb the total cost of a part-time resource officer, and cover fuel and other related expenses. The period will begin on January 1st, 2026 and continue through the end of 2026.
Cortland Schools will pay the full part-time salary of $35,000, according to the City of Cortland. Cortland Police will provide appropriate training for the position and provide a marked patrol vehicle while on duty.
Cortland Mayor Scott Steve highlighted the district’s decision to add another new resource officer for next year is a good one. Councilperson Katy Silliman concurred adding this position is usually young people’s first interaction with a member of law enforcement and is a good one to help build trust and relationships with law enforcement.
