Cortland Police Will Now Allow Trimmed Beards/Approved Tattoos For Officers

The City of Cortland Police Department says as part of the department’s commitment for inclusivity, officer morale, and community engagement, the department has updated their grooming and appearance standards. Officers with the City of Cortland Police Department will now be allowed to grow neatly trimmed beards and display approved tattoos while on duty. The policy goes into effect immediately.

“This policy change reflects our dedication to fostering an inclusive and modern workplace. It allows officers to express themselves while maintaining our professional standards and keeps current with societal changes,” said Police Chief David Guerrera. “Many of our officers have expressed a desire to grow beards or display meaningful tattoos. Updating our standards will enhance officer satisfaction and strengthen our connection with the diverse community we serve.”

The decision to update the department’s grooming policy came after an extensive discussion with officers, community members, and the command staff. In a release by Deputy Chief Cheyenne Cute, he says the revised guidelines will still ensure all visible tattoos remain appropriate and non-offensive while maintaining the professionalism that is expected with law enforcement.

“The City of Cortland Police Department emphasizes that officers are committed to judging individuals based on their actions and character rather than external appearance. The department expects the public will continue to recognize officer’s dedication, professionalism, and service to the community.”

According to the release by Deputy Chief Cute.

Cortland Police say this policy update now has the department join a growing number of law enforcement agencies throughout the country who also have updated their grooming and appearance policies to better reflect the values and identities of their personnel.
