Cortland Police Warning of Fake Speeding Violation Scam Via Text Message

Cortland Police are warning the public of a circulating text message claiming to be an official speeding violation notice. The text message, which Cortland Police say is a scam, informs of a violation from a speed camera within the state and of an unpaid fine. It then at the bottom has a click link to where you would “pay the fine.”

The text message also threatens consequences if the fine is not paid including a failed vehicle inspection. Cortland Police say both New York State and local court systems never demand a payment via text message and legitimate violations are sent through the mail.

The best thing to do if you receive this message is to delete it and report it as spam. Never click on the link within the message. If you have or believe you might’ve clicked the link or provided information, you should contact your bank or credit card company immediately.
