Cortland Police – Stabbing on Tompkins Street in Cortland Determined as Self-Defense

Updated 1:55pm 5/14/2025:

A stabbing that took place just before 9 in the morning on Tuesday, May 13th at 105 Tompkins Street, has been determined to be self-defense, Cortland Police said in a release.

Officers responded to the address to find one male, identified as Dylan Witty, with multiple stab wounds. Police also found another male subject with injuries who was involved in the stabbing. Both Witty and the unidentified male were transported to an area hospital. Cortland Police say Witty was released later that day.

An investigation determined Witty had entered the residence at 105 Tompkins to confront the other individual involved in the stabbing. Witty unlawfully forced entry into the bedroom of the other male involved. After making entry, Witty began to strike the person with a hard wooden object. Cortland Police say the person sustained multiple injuries.

As a result of Witty’s assault, Cortland Police also determined the male who stabbed him multiple times did so in self-defense to stop the assault.

Cortland Police charged Witty with Burglary in the 2nd, Assault in the 2nd, both Felonies, and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 4th, a Misdemeanor. Upon his release from the hospital, he was taken into custody by Cortland Police and is awaiting arraignment.

The man involved in the incident has not been charged. Cortland Police say the investigation remains ongoing at this time. Assisting Cortland Police were Cortland Fire and TLC Ambulance.
