Cortland Police Provides Best Practices to Prevent Break-Ins

The City of Cortland Police Department says keeping your home safe from break-ins should be a top priority of yours. The department has provided tips and best practices on how you can reduce the risk of a burglary in your home or even within your neighborhood.

One of the most important things you can do is ensure all entry points to your home are locked. This includes windows, doors and gates. They should always be locked at night and when you’re out of town. Another good way to deter burglaries are motion sensing lights around the exterior of your home. Properties that are well lit are less appealing to burglars.

Cortland Police say it’s also good to know your neighbors. A neighborhood that is watchful is a safe one. Any suspicious activity should be reported immediately.

Other tips include:

  • Securing your garage and vehicles – Never leave vehicles unlocked and make sure your garage is kept closed when not in use
  • Install video surveillance cameras around your home
  • Reinforce entry doors and windows – This includes upgrading doorframes and reinforced glass
  • Keep any spare keys secured – Do not keep them outside, if you must, choose a location only you would know.
