October is Crime Prevention Month and the City of Cortland Police Department is providing information regarding internet crime and tips to protect your child while they’re on the internet.
Parents should ensure that their child knows to never give out personal information when online. That information includes: their name, address, and school’s name. Parents should also teach their child about scams which appear to be friendly or have offers that are too good to be true.
A computer should also be placed in your house where parents can always see what their child is doing. Parents should also install software that prevents access to inappropriate sites and chat rooms.
Monitoring what your child is doing on the internet should be done regularly, this also will tell you how much time they spend online. More information on keeping your child safe while they’re online can be found at NCPC.org.
