Cortland Police Launch New Website Designed to Improve Accessibility, Community Engagement

The Cortland Police Department has launched a newly redesigned website aimed at improving accessibility, communication, and public access to department services and information.

Police Chief David Guerrera announced the rollout of the updated platform this week, describing it as part of the department’s broader commitment to transparency, community engagement, and modern public service.

The new website is fully ADA-compliant and features a mobile-friendly design, improved navigation, integrated news and alert systems, and expanded contact options intended to better connect residents with police officers and staff.

Residents can also access fillable online forms through the website, allowing for faster and more efficient submission of reports, requests, and other documents. The site includes expanded information on department policies, crime prevention tips, public safety initiatives, and community resources.

“This website is designed to serve as a central hub for timely information and community-oriented policing efforts,” Guerrera said in a statement.

The redesign was completed in partnership with students from SUNY Cortland through Dr. Kathleen Burke’s Community Innovation Lab course in the university’s Economics Department.

According to the department, Burke works with local businesses, nonprofits, and government agencies to identify organizational needs and develop student-led projects that apply skills learned in the classroom.

Five SUNY Cortland students collaborated closely with the police department to assess community needs and recommend improvements that ultimately shaped the updated platform.

“The partnership with SUNY Cortland students brought fresh perspective and experiences to this project,” Guerrera said. “We are proud to launch a website that improves accessibility, increases transparency, and strengthens our connection with the community. The students were wonderful to work with. They were enthusiastic and innovative. Each of them, as well as Dr. Burke, are commended.”
