Cortland Police Officer Drake and K-9 Kort responded to Smith School just before 11 in the morning on Monday, April 15th for a report of a missing child. Cortland Police said a 5-year old male student walked away from the playground and was last seen walking south.

The student was described as a white male with a gray hoodie, gray gloves, and gray sneakers. He was seen walking away from the playground about 15 minutes before the time of the call of the missing student.

A perimeter was set up with the assistance of the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office and the New York State Police. A drone was used with the Homer Police Department also providing theirs in the search for the student. Cortland Police issued a Hyper Reach message just after 11am to residents in the surrounding area.

Around 11:05, Officer Drake and K-9 Kort began their search for the missing student beginning at his last known location on the sidewalk at the southwest corner of the school. Assisting was Sergeant Natoli in the K-9 search.

K-9 Kort led both officers to a driveway on Wheeler Ave. and to a camper parked on the driveway. Cortland Police say the student was located inside the RV at 11:20. He was reunited with school staff and a parent.
