UPDATE 12:15 P.M., AUGUST 30:

City of Cortland Police located and arrested Hewitt around 11:30 a.m. in an abandoned building on Medes Place, after receiving a tip of his whereabouts on Facebook.

He was taken into custody without a struggle and is currently being booked and processed to be arraigned in city court later this afternoon.

City Police have identified a suspect in a stabbing late last night (August 29), in the area of Grindstone Cafe on Main Street in downtown Cortland.

Authorities say just before 11:00 p.m., a 23-year-old male was stabbed three times in the abdomen with a butterfly-style knife, following an altercation with 27-year-old Matthew Sky Hewitt, of Groton Avenue.

A 24-year-old Marine, working late in his recruiting office nearby, stepped outside to intervene and was also stabbed in the leg.

Hewitt then took off and escaped before police arrived.

The 23-year-old was taken to Upstate for serious injuries and the Marine was treated and released from Guthrie Cortland Medical Center.

Hewitt is still at large and also has an arrest warrant for failing to properly register as a sex offender.

Anyone who may be able to help with more information is asked to contact Cortland Police.
