The City of Cortland Police Department says just after 4 in the morning on Sunday, November 24th, officers responded to a burglary in progress at the Super Lucky Express at 180 Main Street in the City of Cortland. Cortland Police say the suspects fled the scene prior to arrival.
The building was equipped with numerous surveillance cameras. After viewing the video of the burglary, Cortland Police say the suspects showed up with two vehicles and parked on the side of the business. A group of six suspects in total, appearing to be teenage males of mixed race, CPD reports, got out of the vehicles and went to the front of the store where one broke the glass door. The suspects then ran in and stole cash and merchandise.
City of Cortland Police Chief David Guerrera told X101 News, due to the nature of the burglary call, one officer responded immediately to the on-ramp to I81 North. The officer saw both fleeing vehicles and went into pursuit, but was not able to keep up and ended the pursuit. One of the fleeing vehicles was later found around 5 in the morning on I81 abandoned with a majority of the stolen property.
Chief Guerrera says the second vehicle involved was found around 8 in the morning, abandoned, in the City of Syracuse. Both vehicles used were reported from the City of Syracuse and were also Infinity’s like the previous burglaries.
“This burglary is similar to five other recent burglaries under investigation by the Cortland Police Department. We believe the six burglaries are related. Video and still photographs of the suspects in this investigation have been posted on the Cortland Police Department’s Facebook Page.” Chief Guerrera said in a release.
Evidence was collected from both abandoned vehicles and the scene, which Chief Guerrera says will help identify the involved juveniles. Anyone who has information on the burglary or the identity of the suspects is asked to contact Cortland Polices investigating detective at 607-344-1101, reference case #C24-19008. All tips are confidential.
