City of Cortland Police Chief Paul Sandy spoke during the Common Council meeting earlier this week regarding the assistance a citizen of Cortland did for a Cortland Police Officer on May 10th.

Back on that date, officer Drake from the City of Cortland Police Department responded to a call of an individual who had left Guthrie Cortland Medical Center without permission.

Officer Drake found the individual, who was noted to be a large individual by Chief Sandy, and was also uncooperative with her.

“It became quite a brutal battle and a citizen came to her (Officer Drake’s) aid. Saw it, did the right thing, did the moral thing and did the legally justifiable thing and came to her aid.” Chief Sandy said to the Council.

Chief Sandy noted this citizens’ actions prevented Officer Drake from getting seriously injured and remained on scene with Officer Drake until other officers arrived to assist.

The citizen that came to assistance was Jason Allen Hartwick of Cortland. Chief Sandy then called Mr. Hartwick up to the podium and then read the certificate of appreciation by the City of Cortland Police Department to Mr. Hartwick.

Hartwick received a round of applause by the Common Council and spectators of the meeting.
