The holiday season is fast approaching and the City of Cortland Police Department is providing residents with tips on how to protect themselves from being victims of package thefts.
Those tips include:
- Having your package delivered to where you are, ex: workplace.
- Use tracking numbers and turning on delivery notifications. Usually a free service, you can receive text alerts of when your package is delivered.
- Ask a family member or trusted neighbor to accept deliveries on your behalf
- Provide delivery instructions to have the package delivered in a less conspicuous location, side door or being a piece of furniture.
- See if a delivery time-frame request is available. You can schedule a delivery when you know you or someone else will be home.
- Installing a security camera at the front door. Ring is the most popular brand, the product can send notifications to your phone of who is at the door, motion at the door, and provide alerts given by neighbors.
- Request a signature for delivery
The City of Cortland Police Department also reminds residents to stay alert, even in their own neighborhoods for any suspicious vehicles and to report it to the police department at 607-756-2811.
