Cortland Man Found Guilty of Criminally Negligent Homicide Following Domestic Dispute With Girlfriend in 2023

Cortland County District Attorney Patrick Perfetti announced yesterday morning a Cortland man has been found guilty after a two-day trial in Cortland County Court. 38 year old Joseph R. Miller of Cortland, was found guilty of Criminally Negligent Homicide, a Felony, Assault in the 3rd, Criminal Obstruction of Breathing or Blood Circulation, and Obstruction of Governmental Administration in the 2nd, all Misdemeanors. The conviction comes after a violent domestic dispute that occurred back on December 22nd, 2023.

The dispute would see 60 year old Laurie Wing of Cortland, Miller’s girlfriend, die 15 days later following complications from the assault.

“This is an example of how domestic violence can turn to a tragic end;” said D.A. Perfetti. “But we are hopeful that the resolution of this case will bring closure to the victim’s family.”

Back on December 22nd, Perfetti says both Miller and Wing had been arguing for several hours in the morning when the dispute, which was over purchasing more alcohol, became physical. A witness in the domestic reported as the dispute went outside of Miller’s apartment, he was armed with a knife and Wing had a laceration on her forehead. A Cortland Police investigation also reported Miller had beaten and strangled Wing. Police responded to the domestic less than 5 minutes from the time of call, D.A. Perfetti noted. Miller was located by police on Union Street, a block away from the assault. Wing refused treatment at the scene, but would later call 9-1-1 after experiencing breathing distress. She would be transported to Guthrie Cortland Medical Center.

After 15 days however, complications from the assault by Miller began a “cascade” of complications which ultimately claimed the life of Wing.

Judge Alexander has scheduled post-conviction motions for November 26th, Perfetti says, with sentencing to take place on December 9th. Miller faces a potential maximum prison sentence of 2 to 4 years, as a second felony offender. Due to Miller’s second felony offender status, a state prison sentence is required by law.

“The credit in securing a conviction in this matter is owed to the good work of the Cortland City Police Department, particularly Det-Sgt B. Byrnes’ thorough documentation of injuries;”

said D.A. Perfetti.
