Cortland Man Arrested Following Brief Foot Chase in City of Cortland
Just after 11:30 Wednesday evening, a traffic stop was conducted on a vehicle by an officer with the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office on Greenbush Street in Cortland. While the officer was attempting the stop, the driver of the vehicle, identified as Donald L. Swartwood of Cortland, got out of the vehicle and fled on foot.
The Sheriff’s Office says Swartwood would then lock himself inside a residence. The reason for the traffic stop was due to Swartwood failing to stop at a stop sign. When officers eventually attempted to take him into custody, they say he failed to obey lawful orders and resisted arrest.
Swartwood was eventually taken into custody. He faces charges of Obstruction and Resisting Arrest, both Misdemeanors, and a ticket for failing to stop at the stop sign. Officers transported Swartwood to the Sheriff’s Office for processing and he was later released on an appearance ticket.
He is due in Cortland City Court next month.
