On Wednesday, December 7th around 6:30 in the morning, the City of Cortland Police Department responded to a reported disturbance at 21 Union St. in the City of Cortland.
When officers arrived, they found 30 year old Jonathan Cepeda, outside in the street pointing at officers with what appeared to be an AR-15 rifle. The officer arriving at the disturbance quickly took cover as he exited his vehicle from Cepeda.
Cepeda made comments towards the officer of shooting people and he was then able to retreat back into his residence on Union St. He eventually came back out of the residence without the rifle and was taken in by CPD officers after being tasered from a short struggle with the officers.
When officers were investigating, they found the weapon to be an airsoft rifle disguised to look like a real weapon.
Cepeda was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon, 2 counts, a Felony, Menacing in the 2nd, 2 counts, and Obstructing Government Administration in the 2nd, 2 counts, both Misdemeanors. He was arraigned in Cortland City Court later in the day.
