Cortland Fire Responds to Dryer Fire at Kleen Korner on Tompkins Street in Cortland
Around 11:20 Sunday morning, Cortland Fire says they were dispatched to the Kleen Korner laundromat at 224 Tompkins Street in the city by County 9-1-1 for a reported dryer fire. Cortland Fire says 9-1-1 dispatch received multiple calls of the fire.
Firefighters arrived on scene about 3 minutes from being dispatched. Inside firefighters found a large commercial-grade dryer with a fire confined inside. A light smoke condition was also inside the laundromat. Cortland Fire turned off power and gas to the dryer. According to Cortland Fire, inside the dryer were clothing and towels on fire. A water extinguisher was utilized to dose the fire and put it out.
Electric fans were then used to clear smoke from inside the building and the contents inside the dryer were taken outside. Cortland Fire says the dryer unit was partially dismantled to extinguish the remaining lint that had also caught fire. Damage was confined to only one dryer, Cortland Fire added.
A preliminary investigation shows the fire was accidental, but a final determination is pending due to further investigation. The owner of the business was on scene and awaiting maintenance to arrive to inspect the unit. The business remained open for customers and was turned over back to the owner after being cleared by firefighters.
Cortland Fire cleared the scene about an hour from the time of call, around 12:22pm. No injuries were reported.
