Just before 2:30 this morning (January 29th), Cortland Fire was dispatched to Old Main on the SUNY Cortland Campus for a reported water problem in the building. On arrival and a search of the building, firefighters found water coming from the third floor ceiling inside the building.
Further investigation found a 6-inch sprinkler system supply pipe in the attic space had broken. The pipe was located in the center of the building in the attic space. Both firefighters and campus staff were able to shut off the sprinkler system.
Once the water was shut off, firefighters assisted workers in water cleanup on all three floors. Cortland Fire says they were on scene for about four hours.
Both City of Cortland Codes and the NYS Office of Fire Prevention and Control are ensuring there are no electrical or fire safety issues once clean up is done.
Old Main is closed today due to the leak. SUNY Cortland says all classes and scheduled events in the building for today, January 29th, have been canceled. Those who physically work at Old Main were asked not to report to work.
