On Thursday, September 14, just after 1 o’clock in the afternoon, the City of Cortland Fire Department responded to an address on East Court Street in the City of Cortland for a reported barn fire.

Cortland Fire responded quickly to the scene and was able to have the fire extinguished in less than ten minutes from the time of the call. Firefighters spent another 30 minutes overhauling the barn to ensure there was no further fire.

An investigation found the cause of the fire to be accidental. A resident had a burn pit in close proximity to the barn, which eventually spread into the barn, Deputy Chief Derek Reynolds told X101 News.

While Cortland was on scene, both Cortlandville and Homer Fire Departments provided standby coverage. No injuries were reported.
