Around 11:10 Sunday night, Cortland Fire responded to the Exit 52 off ramp from I81 North for a reported tractor trailer fire. Arriving firefighters confirmed a FedEx box trailer was on fire. The operator of the tractor trailer was able to disconnect the tractor from the tandem trailers.

Cortland Fire says the bulk of the fire was coming from a set of rear tires on the driver’s side with the fire extending into the trailer itself. Firefighters worked to extinguish the fire while also a separate fire crew began to remove packages unaffected by the fire.

The fire was put out shortly after with several pieces of parcel affected by the flames. There were no injuries to either firefighters or the operator of the tractor trailer. An investigation into the cause of the fire was ruled accidental due to a mechanical failure as a contributing factor.

Assisting Cortland Fire on scene was the Sheriff’s Office, State Police, and Morey’s Towing.
