Cortland Fire Holds Walk-Out Ceremony For Captain Rogers – Retires After 22 Years of Service

After 22 years of service with the Cortland Fire Department, Captain Rich Rogers retired with the department early Tuesday morning. Prior to officially retiring, a walk-out ceremony was held next to the Fire Station on Court Street with members of Cortland Fire, the City of Cortland, Cortland Police, and his family waiting at the end of the line.
Captain Rogers began his service with the Fire Department in March of 2003, where he was assigned as a floater firefighter with A & B shifts of Cortland Rescue. His rank of Captain came in 2014, which he held through his retirement with the department on Monday.
Cortland Fire says Captain Rogers served an integral role in the special operations of the fire department. He ensured proper equipment and training was provided to all members of the fire department. Captain Rogers was also heavily involved in upgrades to both fire stations during his career.

“All members that worked under his command, learned about the importance of integrity, honesty, and commitment to the job.” Cortland County Dispatch read during his send-off.
After his official walk-out ceremony, Cortland Fire Chief Wayne Friedman, who was sworn in as a firefighter with the department the same time as Captain Rogers, spoke on how Captain Rogers made a major influence on his fellow firefighters joking how everyone wanted to be assigned to the B Shift where he was assigned.
Chief Friedman then presented Captain Rogers with a City of Cortland Fire Department Recognition Award. The award recognized his 22 years of service, commitment, sound morals, and mentorship towards fellow firefighters.
After the recognition, Captain Rogers says it was an absolute pleasure, honor, and privilege to be with the Cortland Fire Department. He also thanked his family for their support, especially with a firefighter schedule. He continued on to say how special it is being with the Cortland Fire Department and what everyone who is part of the department brings to the table.
