During the City of Cortland Common Council meeting last night, the council voted to authorize the City of Cortland Fire Department to hire two firefighters to replace two members who plan to retire from the department.

City of Cortland Fire Chief, Wayne Friedman, informed the mayor in a letter that two firefighters plan to retire this January, which will create two vacancies within the department. A firefighter training academy is expected to begin later this month with training finishing by late December.

Authorizing the hiring of two firefighters now would allow them to be amply trained without the fire department being short staffed due to the retirements. The Common Council voted unanimously to approve the hiring of two new firefighters.
