Cortland Fire Credits Quick Action by Homeowner of Removing Burning Lithium Ion Battery From Residence

Around 11:45 in the morning on Tuesday, September 9th, Cortland Fire was dispatched to a lithium ion battery fire at a residence on Cannone Street in the City of Cortland. Cortland County 9-1-1 Dispatch reported a lithium ion battery for a vacuum caught on fire inside the home and the homeowner removed the battery from inside the residence to the sidewalk outside.

Cortland Fire says the homeowners quick actions to remove the burning battery to the sidewalk reduced the risk of the fire spreading throughout the residence. Firefighters worked to quickly extinguish the fire and ensured the area was safe.

Firefighters then collected the spent battery pack and placed it in a special packing material to ensure the battery was fully extinguished. The container was then transported to a certified disposal facility, Cortland Fire says.

No injuries were reported. The home had limited damage, Cortland Fire says.

“Lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices and tools we use every day, but they can pose significant fire risks if they are damaged, improperly charged, or exposed to heat. We urge residents to follow manufacturer guidelines, use only approved chargers, follow charging instructions, and replace batteries that show signs of swelling, overheating, or damage.”

Dustin Contri, Battalion Chief for Cortland Fire said in a release.

Cortland Fire also provided several safety tips regarding lithium ion batteries.

• Only use the charger recommended by the manufacturer
• Do not charge under pillows, on beds, or on couches
• Keep away from direct sunlight and high temperatures
• If a battery begins to smoke, emit an unusual odor, or overheats, immediately dial 9-1-1
