Another scam warning has been issued by the Cortland County Sheriff’s Department. The scam, which starts with either an email or a phone call informing the victim that your Amazon or PayPal account has been compromised and there is now an outstanding balance on your account.

The scammer impersonates someone who works for the company named in the scam and offers to help the victim “fix the problem” by having them downloading an app onto their cell phone.

Once the victim opens the app, the scammer would then be able to control the victims cell phone and have a live view of everything that is open within the phone, including bank account apps that will give them information they need to transfer money out of the account.

The Sheriff’s office reminds that no company will ever ask you to download an app to correct an issue, request payment by gift card, or be in need to access your personal bank account information.

NEVER give out personal information including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, and addresses while over the phone to a potential scammer.
