Cortland County Sheriff Warn of Fraud on Computers

The Cortland County Sheriff’s department is currently investigating reports of a certain Tech Scam that has been circulating throughout the county.

The scam involves a technique of where the victim will get a “pop up” message on their computer or on their email of a warning that states “Threats Detected” on the computer.

The pop-up includes a phone number with directions to call the line for tech assistance. After calling the number a “security technician” answers and asks for payments for services via gift cards.

The Sheriff’s department is letting residents know that real security warnings and messages will never ask you to call a phone number and recommend those who think their computer may be at risk to update their security software or run a scan.

If anyone has experienced this scam or similar situations they are being asked to contact the Sheriff’s department at 607-758-5599.
