Cortland County Sheriff Appoints Burhans As New Undersheriff

Cortland County Sheriff Mark Helms has announced Chad Burhans as the new Cortland County Undersheriff following the retirement of Bud Rigg earlier this year.

Burhans was the Cortland County Road Patrol Captain and is a life-long resident of Cortland County. He’s a 2002 Homer High School graduate who joined the US Marine Corps shortly after high school, receiving an Honorable Discharge in 2005. Burhans later attended Herkimer Community College where he received an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice.

Undersheriff Burhans became a member of the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office in 2007, starting as a County Police Officer before quickly rising through the ranks of Road Patrol Sergeant, Road Patrol Lieutenant, and Road Patrol Captain.
