The latest jobs report for the State of New York has been released, and the figures for Cortland County show an over the year decrease of 200 jobs within the county.
Cortland County currently has about 18,600 private sector jobs, when compared to last year at 18,800 jobs, a 1.1% decrease. Cortland County was one of 6 counties within the state to show a year over year decrease in private sector jobs.
The decrease can be attributed to the closing of both Voyant Beauty and ALPLA, Inc. in the City of Cortland closing late last year resulting in nearly 300 jobs lost.
Overall for the State of New York, the state reported the state added 333,100 jobs, or 4.3%, over the year in January 2023. The state unemployment rate increased by .1% to 4.2% from 4.1% additionally.
