With the fall season finally arriving and the temperatures falling, the Cortland County Health Department is reminding residents that heating equipment is the second leading cause of home fires.

Tips to avoid having a fire start in your residents from a heating unit is to keep all flammable at least 3 feet from space heaters, and if you must use a space heater, to place it on a level, non-flammable surface ex: ceramic tile, and not on a rug or carpet.

The health department is also informing residents to call the Healthy Neighborhoods Program at 607-428-5410 for further information on how to receive free home safety and child safety items.

Fire prevention week is October 9th through the 15th. You can see more information on heating equipment safety HERE.
