Patrick Perfetti, District Attorney for Cortland County, announced yesterday the conviction of 24 year old Lamar Joseph for Rape in the 1st degree after a week-long trial in County Court.

“Unfortunately, nothing can undo the harm to the victim,” said D.A. Perfetti. “But, we are hopeful that this resolution can commence healing and bring about closure for the victim and her family.”

Prosecution in the case came from testimony, DNA evidence, medical examination of the victim, and the defendant’s video recorded statement of the situation, the DA’s office said in a release. The evidence collected revealed that Joseph had committed each of the crimes of which he was indicted for.

Charges on Joseph besides Rape in the 1st degree were: Sexual Abuse in the 3rd, Rape in the 3rd, Sexual Misconduct, Forcible Touching, and Sexual Abuse in the 3rd, all of which were handed down with guilty verdicts by a jury.

As a result of the guilty verdicts, Chief Assistant District Attorney Jessica M. Weyant requested Joseph’s bail be revoked and he then be remanded to jail through sentencing that is scheduled for March 26th. Cortland County Judge David Alexander approved the request and remanded Joseph.

CADA Weyant, who also serves as the D.A.’s Chief Special Victims Prosecutor said; “these cases are often the most challenging any D.A.’s Office faces due to late disclosures, lack of forensics, or the reluctance of victims to testify. This prosecution was successful because the victim reported the crime early, forensic evidence was preserved, and the victim was courageous in coming forward to testify.”

The incident took place back in June 2022, when Joseph met the victim through a social dating app and invited the victim to his residence.
