Cortland County Community Beach Party Tomorrow at Yaman Park, With Over 35 Community Agencies Providing Resources

Matt Brooks: Good morning, I’m Matt Brooks on X101 Always Classic, in for another edition of the Cancer Prevention Segment with the CSP program of Cayuga, Cortland, and Tompkins Counties. Back in the studio with me is Courtney Maxson, senior public health educator from the Cortland County Health Department. How’s it going, Courtney?

Courtney Maxson: It’s going great.

Matt Brooks: It’s an exciting time. It’s August, still plenty of summer to enjoy, but we’re not talking much about cancer prevention this segment particularly, because right around the corner tomorrow is the second annual Cortland Community Beach Party.

Courtney Maxson: I’m so excited, I can’t wait.

Matt Brooks: We had a blast being there last year, and we’re going to be there on location tomorrow as well from 5:00 to 7:00. It’s at Yaman Park, and the list goes on. This thing exploded with things to do.

Courtney Maxson: It really has. We are really excited. From 5:00 to 7:00, we have our community agency fair, so there’s over 35 community agencies that will be there representing to give the public their information and get people enrolled, or showcase what they have to offer in Cortland County.

Matt Brooks: And it’s all so conveniently located. You go to Yaman Park, and you’re going to see our tent first, and then right around the corner, you have them all lined up. You can learn about all these different services available in Cortland County. It was an amazing turnout last year as well.

Courtney Maxson: Yes, it was. It was a great turnout. We’re also going to have some new additions. We have our M&D food truck going to be there, and U-Scream Ice Cream will be there. The first 50 kids can get free ice cream—that’s the plan. We’re hoping for great weather. The Lourdes Guthrie mammogram van will also be on hand to do mammogram screenings right there on location. We couldn’t do all of this without the sponsorship of Guthrie, so we really appreciate that. There is also some great collaboration with not only our Cortland County Health Department and WXHC, but also we’ve had some great collaboration from the mayor’s office and the City Youth Bureau.

Matt Brooks: Yeah, there’s just going to be so much to do. Last year it was a great introductory run with learning about the services, getting the community together—you’re at the beach at Yaman Park. But just the amount of things being added—we’re having the Lilo & Stitch movie, we’re having food, we’re having ice cream, live music afterwards. There’s so much to do, and it’s free to attend, so there’s no reason not to go.

Courtney Maxson: Exactly. Come on down. The band Taylor Made will start at 7:00, and the movie will start at dusk on the beach—Lilo & Stitch.

Matt Brooks: Now I gotta ask, is this the original one that I grew up with, or is it the new one?

Courtney Maxson: I’m not quite sure. I think it might actually be the new one.

Matt Brooks: I haven’t seen it yet, so that’ll be a perfect opportunity for me. I’m always going to have a soft spot for the original. But before we get any further, I do want to mention, because there are the changed bus routes that now allow the bus to actually get to Yaman Park. It’s a great way to get there, but note it’s going to be hard to leave.

Courtney Maxson: Right. So Route 1 is going to be taking people to the Yaman Park area; however, the last run will be leaving around 5:30. So if you plan to stay past 5:30, make sure that you have an alternative ride back home.

Matt Brooks: Or just don’t leave.

Courtney Maxson: I know, right?

Matt Brooks: There’s going to be so much to do, you’re not going to want to leave. Again, starting at 5:00 with the community services, the ice cream, the food truck, the mammogram van. Then at 7:00, you’ve got the live music, and then at dusk, Lilo & Stitch. Free ice cream for the first 50 kids at the ice cream truck, of course, so make sure if you have kids to scramble on that.

Courtney Maxson: Absolutely.

Matt Brooks: And Courtney, is there anything else you wanted to add before we head out? I know we have to prep here at the station for all the fun we’re doing tomorrow.

Courtney Maxson: Yeah, I’m really excited and I have to get back to the office so I can prep too, but I am hoping to see everyone there.
