Around 5 p.m. yesterday evening (July 10th), a severe storm ravaged parts of Cortland County. There were many reports of possible structure fires, wires down, felled trees and other hazardous conditions.

At the Cortland County 911 Call Center, additional staff had to come and assist when call volumes increased and storm conditions became more intense. Dispatchers handled 202 calls for service and took over 350 total calls during the storm, with the peak call rate being 172 per hour. Of those calls, 24 came from the Village of Homer, to which the City of Cortland provided mutual aid. Cortland Fire Chief Wayne Friedman stated that those incidents were handled without issue.

Dispatchers did an outstanding job during a very chaotic event working along side their partners in law enforcement, fire, EMS, highway departments and local utilities.
