Cortland County Bans Designated Tobacco & Cannabis Smoking Areas For County Employees
The Cortland County Legislature voted to update the county’s current Tobacco and Cannabis use policy during last Thursday’s Legislative meeting for the month of April. The update would ban designated smoking areas of Tobacco and Cannabis on all county-owned property.
Previously, the policy allocated designated areas to where smoking was allowed for county employees.
The Legislature voted 15-2 to ban designated smoking areas for county employees at county worksites. Legislators Eccleston and Heider voted against, with Legislator Eccleston stating employees would then stand in front of private properties on sidewalks to smoke.
County employees were also reminded the Cortland County Health Department has materials available to help in quitting smoking. The updated policy will take effect come September 1st, 2025.
