The City of Cortland Common Council meets tonight, January 17th at 6pm in City Hall at 24 Court St. Before the meeting three public hearings will be held regarding the proposed law relating to the Planning Commission, Police Commission, and the Zoning Board of Appeals.

The public hearing for the planning commission is to establish the commission and provide for membership and terms of office (Agenda Item No. 1). Those terms would be 3-years and the board would consist of 7 members appointed by the common council with one member being chair.

For the next item on the agenda will be to adopt local law relating to the Police Commission Membership and Duties. The City of Cortland last March, received a review and report by a committee of city residents of the City of Cortland Police Departments policies and actions.

Some of the changes to the Police Commission and duties are listed below:

  • The Police Commission will consist of 5 members who will be appointed by the Mayor with approval from the Common Council.
  • The term of the members will be 5 years with no compensation, except for compensation for expenses, if approved by the council.
  • The terms of office will be staggered over the 5-year period.
  • The Mayor will appoint replacements if a vacancy occurs, that replacement member will serve the remainder of the term.

Agenda Item No. 3, adopting local law relating to Zoning Board of Appeals Membership. The City of Cortland Common Council will establish the membership in accordance with provisions by the State.

The board will then consist of 5 members appointed by the Mayor and approved by the council. The terms of membership will consist of 5 years and may not be appointed to more than 3 consecutive terms. No member on the board will receive compensation unless authorized compensation expenses by the council.
