The City of Cortland Common Council held a meeting Tuesday night to discuss various agenda items, including creating an additional uniformed sergeant in the Cortland Police Department.
The measure would increase department staffing by one uniformed sergeant in 2023. It would also grant authority to hire one police officer to backfill the patrol division vacancy created by the sergeant promotion. Cortland PD Chief Paul Sandy explained why he needs another sergeant on the PD staff.
“We have 5 sergeants working 5 twos. We will be able to cover far more of the shifts that’ll allow for time off. I’m not going to hold back, down the road I’ll ask for a 6th (sergeants). Then we could have two per shift and we would have 24/7 sergeant coverage.” Chief Sandy told the Mayor and Council.
The measure was approved unanimously by the Common Council.
