The Cortland Common Council meeting on Tuesday December 7th passed a resolution to include in the 2022 tax bill a fee of 35.2 cents per foot of street address frontage on each parcel within the city of Cortland.
Council person Kathryn Silliman stated “I think this is a great idea and not at a great cost to property owners.”
Council Person Tom Michales questioned if “This covers businesses as well as non for profits.”
Tobin replied back to confirm that it would cover every property within the city limits. The fee will include SUNY Cortland, Guthrie Medical Center, Churches, non for profits as well as the Cortland City School district.
When asked if this is an actual tax Tobin responded “It is not a tax it is a fee…. similar to a water/sewer bill.”
The resolution was passed 8-0.
The reason to the fee is to help the City of Cortland with the preservation of the water systems, maintenance, repair, rehabilitation and reconstruction.
