The Cortland Police Department’s annual “Click It Or Ticket” campaign has been in place since May 20 and will continue to run through this Sunday (June 2).
Officers have directed various enforcement patrols and set up compliance road checks with help from the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office, New York State Police, and SUNY Cortland Police.
Click It or Ticket is a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration campaign aimed at increasing the use of seat belts nationwide, especially among young people.
In May 2002, researchers say the ten U.S. states with the most comprehensive campaigns saw an increase of 8.6 percentage points in safety belt usage over a four-week period.
The campaign relies heavily on targeted advertising aimed at teens and young adults. Congress recently approved $30 million in television and radio ads at both the national and state levels.
