Cortland American Legion Auxiliary Post 489 to Honor National Poppy Day Friday with Poppy Distribution

The Cortland American Legion Auxiliary Post 489 will be holding a Poppy distribution this Friday, May 24th from 9am to 1pm at the Price Chopper in Cortlandville and P&C in Riverside Plaza in the City of Cortland.

The distribution is part of the American Legion honoring National Poppy Day. The American Legion brought National Poppy Day to the US by asking Congress to designate the Friday before Memorial Day as the official holiday, Congress authorized the day back in 2017.

“The red poppy is a nationally recognized symbol of sacrifice worn by Americans since World War I to honor those who served and died for our country in all wars. It reminds Americans of the sacrifices made by our veterans while protecting our freedoms.”

According to the American Legion Auxil

The American Legion Auxiliary will distribute poppies with a request that the person receiving the flower make a donation to support the future of veterans, active-duty military personnel and their families with medical and financial needs.

The American Legion Auxiliary Post 489 will also be at Cortland Memorial Park on Memorial Day distributing poppies prior to the ceremony.
