Cornell Researchers Discover New Trends In Bird Migration

Local News

New radar technology is shedding light on just how many birds migrate back and forth for the seasons, and the numbers may astound you.

Using cloud computing and data from 143 weather radar stations across the United States, researchers from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology now estimate that an average of 4 billion birds move south from Canada into the U.S. every autumn.

At the same time, another 4.7 billion birds leave the U.S. over the southern border, heading to the tropics.

Only 3.5 billion of these Southbound birds cross back into the U.S. when it comes spring time, and only 2.6 billion birds return to Canada across the northern U.S. border.
