Community Theatre Launches Urgent Fund Drive to Replace Aging Sound System

After decades of supporting performances with clear, reliable audio, the sound system at Cortland Repertory Theatre (CRT) has reached the end of its lifespan, prompting an urgent fundraising campaign ahead of the company’s milestone 55th season.

The theatre announced that its current CRT Sound Board, a critical component for amplifying music, dialogue, and effects, is no longer capable of meeting production demands. Technicians have advised that repairs would be both costly and temporary, while replacement parts and rebuilt units are increasingly difficult to source and already technologically outdated.

Instead, CRT is seeking to invest in a new, state-of-the-art sound board, estimated to cost $31,400. The expense was not included in the organization’s annual budget, leading leadership to turn to the community for support.

“This is an essential investment in the future of our productions,” said Producing Artistic Director Kerby Thompson. “Every show depends on sound quality—without it, the audience experience simply isn’t the same.”

To help meet the goal, a CRT board member has pledged to match all donations made by March 31, dollar for dollar, up to $15,000. The matching initiative effectively doubles each contribution, giving donors added incentive to participate.

The campaign is already halfway to its fundraising target, but organizers say additional support is needed to close the gap before the deadline.

As an added benefit, donors who contribute $1,000 or more by March 31 will receive two complimentary tickets to any of CRT’s 2026 summer productions. Contributions are also fully tax-deductible, as CRT operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Community members can donate by mailing checks to CRT’s Sound Board Fund Drive, making an online contribution, or visiting CRT Downtown on Port Watson Street during weekday business hours.

The theatre emphasized the importance of the upgrade not just for performers, but for audiences as well.

“A new sound board ensures every whispered line, every musical note, and every dramatic moment reaches our audience exactly as intended,” Thompson said.

With the campaign underway, CRT is calling on supporters to rally behind what it describes as a vital effort to sustain high-quality live theatre in Cortland.

“If CRT has ever made you laugh, cry, or feel connected,” Thompson added, “we hope you’ll consider helping us sound better than ever for seasons to come.”
