Today is Tuesday and the City of Common Council will meet tonight at 6pm at City Hall. Before the meeting two public hearings will be held, one for proposed local law no. 12 to allow for building or property repurpose that serves a substantial public benefit and then local law no. 13 to amend applicable City of Cortland Charter and Administrative Code Provisions relative to code enforcement in order to comply with the latest state local code requirements.

Other items on the agenda include authorizing an application and acceptance for FEMA assistance to firefighter grant program SAFER Hiring Grant. If awarded the grant, the City of Cortland would be given a grant to hire two career firefighters for the amount of $641,005.28 dollars.

The FEMA Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program manages the SAFER Grant Program for the hiring of career firefighters and also the recruitment and retention of volunteer firefighters. The grant provides 100% federal funding for the cost of salary and fringe benefits for 3 years.

Additionally, the Common Council will vote for authorizing an application and acceptance of a FEMA Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program Fire Prevention and Safety Grant. The grant, if awarded, will assist the fire department with replacing a 15 year old fire extinguisher training prop, which also no longer works properly.

The grant requires a 5% local match to the cost. The Federal share would be $20,649 dollars with the local share being $1,033 dollars.
