During last night’s Common Council meeting, councilpersons approved the adoption of Local Law No. 7, which increases the term of mayor from a 2 year term to a 4 year term.
The council also approved Local Law No. 6, which will increase the terms of councilpersons from a 2 year term to a 4 year term as well.
The reason for the increase in term lengths says the city, is a 2 year term is insufficient for elected officials to provide an adequate window of long-lasting representation.
The two laws will still need final approval by voters on the November 8th election for this year.
If passed by voters, the term for an elected council person in the City and Mayor at the general election on November 7, 2023 will now be 4 years beginning on January 1, 2024.
