A city of Cortland police officer was attacked early this morning by a man believed to have been under the influence of drugs.
The uniformed patrolman pulled his squad car into the Mavis on Clinton Avenue to put air in his tires just before 12:30 am.
Upon stepping out of the vehicle, he was immediately rushed from behind by 34-year-old Joseph R. Miller, a resident of Clinton Ave.
Miller grabbed the officer and punched him in the face several times.
The officer called for assistance and was able to physically fend off Miller after a short altercation, who was taken into custody and brought to GCMC for evaluation.
Both Miller and the officer sustained minor injuries during the incident, but neither required medical treatment.
Police say they have no motive in the attack other than Miller’s apparent drug-induced mental state.
He was charged with;
- Harassment 2nd (V)
- Resisting Arrest (M)
- Assault 2nd (F)
Miller will face arraignment on these charges later today.
