Tompkins County and the City of Ithaca are looking study consolidation of city and county law enforcement agencies.
City of Ithaca Mayor Svante Myrick and Tompkins County Legislature Chairman Michael Lane are asking the state to fund a shared services study for local police.
More shared services could save money and improve the quality of law enforcement.
The city and county are looking to tap into a $150 million dollar pot of state money that has been designated to look at municipal consolidation and shared services. The money would be used to hire consultants to assist with the study.
The city and the county already work together on some law enforcement initiatives including 911 dispatching, the joint S.W.A.T. team, and drug task force.
