One agenda item that has not been discussed by a common council since 2010 is dog licenses issued by the city.
According to the Common Council, the last change to the fees for dog licenses was put in effect on January 1 of 2011.
The city’s current dog license fee is $7.50 for an altered dog and $18.00 for an unaltered dog.
The city says those are below those fees of neighboring and nearby municipalities.
In last night’s meeting it was unanimously approved to raise dog license fees effective January 1st, 2023.
New fee structure:
Altered (spayed/neutered) Dog License
City license fee: $10.00
State surcharge: $ 1.00
Total Dog License Fee: $11.00
Unaltered (not spayed/neutered) Dog License
City license fee: $20.00
State surcharge: $ 3.00
Total Dog License Fee: $23.00
Year-to-date Cortland has licensed approximately 733 altered dogs with license fees totaling
$5,500.00, and approximately 154 unaltered dogs with license fees totaling $2,800.00, according to the city.
$5.00 of the fee for unaltered dogs, which is estimated to be approximately $850.00, shall be
allocated to the Central New York Spay and Neuter Assistance Program (CNY SNAP) consistent with New York State Agriculture and Markets Law.
