The City of Cortland Common Council has appointed Cortland native and resident of the 5th Ward in the city, Tom Conlon, to serve as the next councilperson for the 5th Ward in the City of Cortland. The vote was unanimous by the council, Councilpersons Pennello and Carpenter were absent.
Conlon, who resides on Fredrick Ave. will serve through December 31st, 2025. An election for a full term will be held on November 5th this year with the winner filling in the remainder of the term through December 31st, 2027.
In a release by the City of Cortland, Conlon is a graduate from Cortland High School and attended the College of Saint Rose in Albany. Later on he would work for a number of years in the State Assembly gaining valuable experience in the legislative process and policy analysis. Conlon would return to Cortland in 2022 where he took a position at Bailey Place Insurance.
“As someone who grew up in Cortland and returned home with an even greater appreciation for the community that helped to shape the person I’ve become, I’m honored to have the opportunity to serve the residents of the 5th Ward,” said Conlon. “I’m excited to get to work addressing the challenges we face as a city.”
Conlon fills the vacancy left by Seth Thompson, who resigned back on June 18th. Due to city code, it is required that the vacancy be filled by a person who has the same political party affiliation as the person who leaves. The Cortland County Democratic Committee assisted the city in providing a recommendation to the Common Council. The committee’s recommendation of Conlon was unanimous. Councilperson Conlon will begin his position immediately and will have his first sitting on the council during their next meeting on July 15th.
