City of Cortland Enters Into Agreement to Allow Fiber Optic Installation – Promises Free Internet to City-owned Buildings

The City of Cortland will be entering into an agreement with Empire Access for Fiber Optic Internet and Telecommunications for easement rights within the City of Cortland to expand the availability of fiber optic services within the city limits.

Empire Access calls themselves a local company based in Prattsburgh, New York. The company operates in both New York and Pennsylvania in 18 counties with over $45 million dollars in revenue.

Residents and businesses within the City of Cortland are said to benefit from the agreement, bringing competitive choices for both residents and businesses when choosing their internet providers.

Plans call for the fiber optic cables to be run through the now defunct City of Cortland fire alarm network. Empire Access would utilize the fire alarm network to install their fiber optic cables. As part of the agreement, the City of Cortland will receive free internet access from Empire on all properties and buildings. This includes the city parks.

Mayor Steve noted the City of Cortland would save an estimated $130,000 dollars a year with the service. Steve also noted another important feature with this agreement:

“Probably more importantly or just as important is having broadband available to everybody. Based on some of the costs that are done with a sole provider has been high rates. This gives us an option. [Empire Access] is talking about $50 a month.”

Mayor Steve said.

The fiber optic is expected to be up and running by this year with an expansion planned in 2025.

The Common Council voted unanimously to authorize Mayor Scott Steve to enter into an agreement with Empire Access. The agreement will not obligate the city financially and will grant the Empire with access and easement rights. You can learn more about Empire Access by visiting their website, HERE.
