City of Cortland Common Council Member Charged With DWI After Vehicle Crash – Also Faces Charge of Aggravated Unlicensed Operation
Just after 9:30 in the evening on Friday, May 9th, Cortland Police responded to a two-vehicle crash on Clinton Ave. Extension in the City of Cortland. On arrival, officers found a 2019 Chevy Pickup and 2015 Audi with heavy damage as a result of the crash.
An investigation into the cause of the crash determined the Chevy pickup, driven by 50 year old Wayne Schutt, had rear-ended the Audi that was turning onto I81 Northbound from Clinton Ave. Officers also determined that Schutt had been driving under the influence of alcohol. He was treated by TLC Ambulance on scene for head pain; the other driver was uninjured.
Wanye Schutt currently serves on the City of Cortland Common Council representing the 1st Ward in the City of Cortland. He was first elected to the position during the 2021 General Elections.
Schutt was charged with DWI, Driving While Intoxicated Blood Alcohol Content greater than .08%, and Aggravated Unlicensed Operation, all Misdemeanors. He was also cited for following too closely to another vehicle.
Cortland Police added while they were investigating the crash on scene, an acquaintance of Schutt, identified as 52 year old Jennifer L. McCracken drove to the scene of the crash and parked her vehicle. Cortland Police say McCracken then approached the investigating officers where they determined she was also under the influence of alcohol.
Officers arrested and charged McCracken with DWI and Driving While Intoxicated Blood Alcohol Content greater than .08%.
Both Schutt and McCracken were transported to the Cortland Police Station for processing and were later released. They are due in Cortland City Court next month.
