City of Cortland Begins First Steps Towards Making Front Entrance to City Hall ADA Accessible
The City of Cortland has begun the process towards making the front entrance to City Hall on Court Street ADA accessible. At Tuesday’s Common Council meeting, the council voted unanimously for Mayor Steve to apply for a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Planning funding.
The city looks to apply for up to $50,000 through the CDBG program. If awarded, the funds will go towards preparing a preliminary engineering report for handicap accessibility improvements at City Hall with a focus on the front entrance.
“This is the beginning stages of what has to happen to make our building ADA compliant. A little bit easier than [having] people get in [to the building] from the back.”
Mayor Steve said.
Currently, the front entrance to City Hall is not ADA compliant with a single step and no ramp to the front doors. After entering through the front entrance and through security, you immediately face stairs going up to city offices or down to the Police Station. Handicap accessibility to City Hall is currently located in the rear of the building with elevator access. This entrance is usually locked and requires visitors to press a call button for assistance.
