Deputy chief Duane Pierce retired Friday (April 17) from the city of Cortland Fire Department.
A line of local first responders waited outside headquarters on Court Street as he exited for the final time of his more than two-decade career.
He and Wayne Friedman, the current chief, were sworn in together back in 2019. At the time, Charles Glover and Bill Knickerbocker — who made up a dual chief role — retired within months of each other.
Pierce also served as a code officer for the city, as well as a state fire instructor.

CFD also promoted longtime member Robert Jennison to Captain.
He’s an 18 year veteran of the department.
“We look forward to having you in the leadership ranks. Congratulations Captain Jennison and Family.”
